Gdansk - General Information

Situated on the southern edge of Gdańsk Bay on the Baltic Sea, Gdańsk was perhaps once best known for its shipyards, where members of the Solidarity trade union movement helped to precipitate the end of Communism in Eastern Europe in the late-1980s. However, Gdańsk’s rich, turbulent history stretches back much further, to the 14th century, when it was a member of the mighty Hanseatic League. This legacy has bequeathed it many fine Burgher houses. Most of these are them situated in the newly restored Old Town, along or near Ulica Długa (Long Street) and Długi Targ (Long Market), both of which are flanked at either end by elaborate city gates. Of equal interest are the Old City Hall, the impressively ornate Gothic Oliwa Cathedral, the Gdansk History Museum, and St. Mary’s, the largest brick church in the world. Gdańsk is also sometimes called the “Amber Capital of the World” and products made from this semi-precious stone can be found in many of the city's shops. Add to all this numerous bars, clubs and cafés, and you have a vibrant, newly confident European city.
