Situated on the southern edge of Gdańsk Bay on the Baltic Sea, Gdańsk was perhaps once best known for its shipyards, where members of the Solidarity trade union movement helped to precipitate the end of Communism in Eastern Europe in the late-1980s. However, Gdańsk’s rich, turbulent history stretches back much further and has bequeathed it many fine Burgher houses. Most of these are situated in the newly restored Old Town. Of equal interest are the impressively ornate Gothic Oliwa Cathedral, the Gdansk History Museum, and St. Mary’s, the largest brick church in the world. (...more)
